The rules

Under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994, you can drive an untaxed vehicle:

• Only to a pre-booked MOT test
• At the nearest available testing station (not one across town because it's cheaper)
• The appointment must be pre-booked — you can't just turn up and claim the exemption
• The vehicle must be insured (insurance is separate from tax)

What about driving home after?

If your car passes the MOT, you can drive it home and then tax it immediately online. If it fails, you can drive it home only if no "dangerous" faults were recorded. Dangerous faults mean the car cannot be driven at all.

2. If tax lapses, book the MOT immediately
3. Tax the vehicle online as soon as it passes — you can do it on your phone in the car park
